November 30, 2007 The head human said I was having a bad mare day. Bad mare day???? What does she know about it? Just because I have hissy fits in the dry lot doesn't mean I'm having a bad mare day. Sometimes the other mares just look at me too much. Or get too close. Or one of the geldings starts asking dumb questions. I try to be patient, but they just keep looking, or standing, or asking and I can't take it any more and I have to vent or I'd explode. Let's see if the humans would like to clean up that mess. I don't think so. Bad mare day??? I'm not having a bad mare day. Just because I tried to kick Chance doesn't mean it's a bad mare day. He deserved it, the gelding. Trotting around, smirking, and looking at me just like he owned the place. Mares are supposed to put geldings in their place. Bad mare day?? This is nothing. Those humans better hope I don't ever really have a bad mare day. |

November 26, 2007 Story and I are so brave. We're the bravest mares on the farm. Want to know why? We went on a trail ride and went all the way down to the bridge by the road. Almost. Well, we went pretty far down the road. The horses in the front pasture were trash-talking at us, but there was a fence and they were inside it, so Story and I just ignored them. Yep, we were outside of that fence and could have gone anywhere we wanted. Freedom tastes sweet, like Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies. |

November 24, 2007 Hi, it's me, Simon. I'm the quiet, but very handsome, gelding way back in the corner of the barn. I'm pretty far away from Pippi and Story's stalls, but even so, I can still hear them gossiping and yacking away all night long. They finally fell asleep so I mustered up all my courage to sneak down there and borrow Pippi's computer. I had to do it, you see, because it's my human's birthday. I had to let her know I remembered. Happy birthday, Mandy! Hope all your birthday wishes come true. I'll try to be braver and not spook so much when we're riding. I really don't like dumping you off, and it hasn't happened in quite awhile, so I'm hopeful it won't happen again. Okay, I know Pippi always sings the birthday song, so here goes (and don't laugh because I've never sung before) "It's your birfday. We're gonna party like it's your birfday. Drink apple cider 'cause it's your birfday. We're gonna party like it's your birfday. And we don't really care 'cause it's your birfday!" XXOO, Simon P.S. Jack says Happy Birthday, too! |

November 22, 2007 I heard that it's a human holiday today – Thanksgiving. While you humans are off stuffing yourselves silly with food, I'll tell you what we horses are thankful for – that you're not here. You're giving us the day off from riding. So, first we're just going to hang out in the pasture, maybe play Chase the Apaloosa or some other running game. Then once we're put back in our stalls and our head human, Kay, leaves for her holiday celebration, we're going to play cards. Texas Hold 'Em is Ebby's favorite because he's a good bluffer. And Bok is the best at Blackjack – he can count cards. Mistie makes fun of Story and I by saying that all we can play is Old Maid. We hope she gets sold soon. Filly! Youth is wasted on the young. Happy Thanksgiving, humans. Watch your food intake. When you get back on us Friday, we'll be able to tell if you had that third helping of stuffing and the second piece of pumpkin pie. |

November 19, 2007 What a week we had! First, Smoky got really sick and had to go to the hospital. Then Taz poked his eye and Dr. Dana had to come here. I'm just glad that everyone's OK and things are back to normal. When Smoky came back home on Saturday, I had to get all the details of what had happened to him. He said his belly hurt just awful, and he didn't even want to eat. "Well, I managed to choke down a couple bites of hay," explained Smoky, "but grain just didn't do it for me anymore." He didn't even mind all the humans peering at him as he lay in his stall, but Smoky did have an issue when it was time to get him in the trailer to go to the hospital. "I couldn't believe I had to get in the trailer!" Smoky exclaimed. "There was no way I could go on a trail ride or compete in a show. I looked at my human and said, 'Dude, what are you thinking?' " Luckily, Smoky wasn't being trailered to go to work, and instead he was rushed to see Dr. Dana, who made him all better. "Yeah, I'm feeling fine now. Food goes in. Food comes out," revealed Smoky. "Life is good!" |

November 16, 2007 Good news about Smoky – it sounds like he's going to pull through. He may even be back at the farm today. Whew, what a relief! |
|
November 15, 2007 I'm worried – Smoky is really sick. He's been down all day and barely ate. His human took him to Dr. Dana's, so all of us horses are praying that she can make him feel better. Let's all say a prayer for Smoky. |

November 11, 2007 I went for a trail ride at Belezaire. Just me and my human, riding down in between the barns, then back and around the outside of the arena. I must say that going around the outside of the fence is quite fun. I was a little concerned at first, but I've really started trusting my human. She's come a long ways, and I think she might be able to protect me if something scary popped up. It makes me feel much more secure to think of her as the leader instead of me. I'm much better at following than leading. Speaking of following, I hope Story's back at our lesson Tuesday night. Nothing makes me happier than being able to tuck in behind her rump and follow her around all night. She hasn't been there the past two weeks and I've missed her. |

November 7, 2007 I heard through the horsevine that Story's human has been sick for over a week. Story's been very concerned because her human hasn't been out to see her, but I heard my human telling her all about what's going on, so Story's not afraid that she's going to get sold or anything now. And my human even shared some of my carrots with her. I wasn't the happiest about that, but it made Story feel better so I guess it was okay. I'm just a very generous horse. If you look up generous in the dictionary, you'll see my picture. Anyway, to Story's human – hope you get feeling better real soon. And hope it's not your feet. Being lame is no fun and sometimes they have to put you down for that. So keep walking – don't let anyone see you limp. |

November 5, 2007 Sundae sent me another e-mail! Sounds like she's doing great, and you'll never believe what she's been doing. "Hi Pippi, It's been a long time since I sent an update so thought I would send a whinny. Things are still good over here. There have been some horses come and go, but I got to tell you about Ellie. They say she is a Clydesdale – all I know is she is the biggest mare I have ever seen! Her feet are as big around as my feed bucket. Something else is I surprised my girl and her mom. I am sure you heard Liz is learning how to ride a jumping horse. Well I showed her, I let her take me over a jump or two and I did it very well, too. You should have heard them – they couldn't believe it! Glad they didn't make it too high, though. Anyway, the Old Mare has still got it! In any case, I still miss you guys; tell the old gang I said hello. FYI – the boys still have to show off when I go by their pasture. It used to be great fun, but now its just annoying. Sundae"
